My Aunt Thelma refused the colon cancer operation that her doctors said was necessary to save / extend her life. They told her that without the operation, she would probably only live a few more months. They told her that after the operation, she would not be able to live on her own and would have to reside in a nursing home.

My Aunt refused the operation. The doctors referred to her as 'the non-compliant'.

Aunt Thelma lived a productive life on her own for ten more years. It was only at the end of the tenth year that she required assistance from others.
